Melasma is a skin condition that almost exclusively affects middle-aged women.

It is characterized by the appearance of brown patches, typically located on the forehead, nose, chin, upper lip, and the central part of the cheeks.

In some cases, melasma may appear after starting hormonal birth control or during pregnancy. In 50% of cases, no clear trigger can be identified (other than sun exposure).

Treatment is individualized. We may prescribe topical creams or perform procedures such as microneedling, which enhances the absorption of depigmenting substances for deeper penetration.
